Satellite telemetry is an increasingly utilized technology in wildlife research, and current devices can track individual animal movements at unprecedented spatial and temporal resolutions. However, as we enter the golden age of satellite telemetry, we need an in-depth understanding of the main technological, species-specific and environmental factors that determine the success and failure of satellite tracking devices across species and habitats. Here, we assess the relative influence of such factors on the ability of satellite telemetry units to provide the expected amount and quality of data by analyzing data from over 3,000 devices deployed on 62 terrestrial species in 167 projects worldwide. We evaluate the success rate in obtaining GPS fixes as well as in transferring these fixes to the user and we evaluate failure rates. Average fix success and data transfer rates were high and were generally better predicted by species and unit characteristics, while environmental characteristics influenced the variability of performance. However, 48% of the unit deployments ended prematurely, half of them due to technical failure. Nonetheless, this study shows that the performance of satellite telemetry applications has shown improvements over time, and based on our findings, we provide further recommendations for both users and manufacturers.

RESUMO

Cerebral autosomal dominant arteriopathy with subcortical infarcts and leukoencephalopathy (CADASIL) is a recently described neurovascular disease affecting young to middle age individuals. The disease is caused by mutations in the Notch3 gene located in the short arm of chromosome 19. Clinically, the disease is characterized by migrainous headaches (with or without aura), mood disturbances, focal neurologic deficits, transient ischemic attacks, strokes, and dementia. Pathologically, the disease is characterized by a stereotypic degeneration of the arterial walls (especially in the intracranial compartments) with deposition in the media of a nonatheromatous, nonamyloidotic substance that under the electron microscope (EM) appears as a granular osmiophilic material (GOM), pathognomonic for the disease. The nature of the GOM is undetermined and the pathogenesis remains to be elucidated. A review of current literature in English language is presented on the clinical, radiologic, pathologic, and genetic features of CADASIL.

Onion bulbs are concentric lamellar structures formed by Schwann or perineurial cells, which may be seen in several generalized or localized diseases of the peripheral nerve. There is debate regarding the pathogenesis of localized tumefactions displaying these microscopic structures. We report the fifth case, to our knowledge, of a Schwann cell-onion bulb tumor, which arose in the trigeminal nerve of a child with an unclassifiable, probably distinct, neurocutaneous syndrome; we also provide evidence for a neoplastic or hamartomatous origin. Molecular studies failed to establish an abnormality in the NF1, NF2, PMP22, or Connexin 32 genes. Similar and previously reported cases are discussed, as well as other onion bulb-forming entities.

OBJECTIVE: To determine the prevalence of pregnancy and contraceptive use among female inpatients at a Denver detoxification center who were at risk of becoming pregnant. METHODS: The authors administered surveys and pregnancy tests to 373 female admissions to the Denver CARES detoxification center between March and September 1996. RESULTS: Most were admitted for alcohol-related reasons, and most reported previous pregnancies. Seven percent of admissions had positive pregnancy tests, and 56% of admissions reported not using contraceptives with every sexual encounter. CONCLUSIONS: Routine assessment of pregnancy status and contraceptive use in women admitted for detoxification, along with on-site family planning services, may be important components of efforts to prevent adverse outcomes associated with substance abuse during pregnancy, including fetal alcohol syndrome.
